(A) At present the society is powerless and helpless before the democratic machinery given to us by The Constitution of India. The Constitution gives all the power to it’s 3 pillars namely, the Legislature, the Administration & the Judiciary. The People have no control or even say, in their working or decisions. The Media, supposed to be the 4th pillar of democracy, is given so much power & freedom as it is supposed to represent the voice of the silent majority i.e. society as a whole with all the diversities. So before writing or presenting any and every issue affecting the society, the media has a responsibility to discuss that issue with that section of the society, which will be affected, know their views and opinions, and then present the issue before the three pillars of the democratic machinery in such a way as to enable them to take decisions and actions in an informed and well thought out manner which will then be beneficial to all the concerned sections of the society. Sadly the media has failed in its mandated responsibility.
(A) (1) Therefore in order to give the long overdue voice to the silent society, the media, especially print and television media, should be made accountable to the society as a whole and the sections of the society which suffer due to the media’s writings, programs, policies and indifference to the sufferings of their victims. For this purpose, a separate platform should be created where any individual or group or sections of the aggrieved people can complain and ask for redressal or compensation for the harm caused to them by the media. Also, an enforcement mechanism should be created which is empowered to deliver justice to the sufferers. Only then the media will become responsive, accountable and hence responsible which will help the society as well as the democratic machinery.
